    1. Find this and other reviews at flashlightcommentary. There is a saying in the armed forces, that if the military had wanted you to have a family, they d have issued you one I used to think it a funny turn of phrase, but that was before married the marine corps No matter the branch or position, there is always a degree of distance, a no man s land you learn to avoid, to dance around and ignore.Author M.K Tod took this concept and ran with it, building a narrative around this tiny grain of truth an [...]

    2. Reading books set during times of war never seem to fail to point out either the horrors experienced by those brave men fighting for their countries or the sacrifices and activities of the women left home to worry for their loved ones Unravelled is the first book I can think of that combines both a husband s experiences and inner workings and that of his wife, with all the loneliness, hurt and healing that is sure to happen with the continual ebb and flow of uncertainty. When Edward Jamieson rece [...]

    6. This is the first book of Mary Tod that I ve read Loved it And I m on to her next workThere is little glory to be found in war and love remains a fickle thing An engrossing WWI and II saga historical fiction at its prime A fresh retelling of the horrors of war as experienced by those who fought in the trenches and those who remained behind and fought similar demons at home The author succeeds with her mastery of language to paint realistic and haunting pictures of war, of love, of marriage and o [...]

Unravelled is an appropriate title for this book Te secrets and lies begin when Edward, a veteran of the Great War receives an invitation to attend the dedication of the Vimy Memorial Ann pressures him to attend and there s no turning back Ann and Edward s marriage begins to unravel This is a powerful story and the research was meticulous Having very recently taken a battlefields tour, I was very interested in many of the places mentioned in the book The descriptions of the war are very detailed [...]

    8. As a historian, I m always wary about historical fiction, especially books set in my field of study That said, I was thrilled when a piece of historical fiction goes above and beyond my expectations That is what happened with Unravelled The book drew me in from the first page and didn t let me go until the end The writing was superb, the characters engaging, and the history sound The title intrigued me as many a marriage didn t survive the war or its after effects This isn t a light read but it [...]

    9. I m the author of this book so what can I say except that I loved writing it And I equally love hearing from people who read it.

    10. Despite being set in a turbulent time and having a sombre theme, I was totally transported into the lives of Ann and Edward in this book that is full of passion and intrigue Theirs is not an easy life, there are secrets, troubles, pain, sacrifices and the story twists and turns over the years with the reader as uncertain of what their future will hold as the couple themselves Ann is a very strong character and by the end of the novel I was very fond of her, although there were things she did alo [...]

    13. This well researched book spans the time period between the First and Second World War and describes the effect of those world events on a marriage I found the information on the role of the Signals branch in WWI fascinating, since I have never previously given much thought to how communication occurred in the trenches during that war The description of the contribution made by Canada in both wars was also illuminating since so much focus is normally on the role of the major players During the 2 [...]

    14. Note This book was given to me gratis by the author in return for an honest review Format I read this in Kindle e pub format Navigation worked perfectly however, the decision to place the table of contents at the end of the book is curious and awkward As an aside, the cover art is gorgeous, and I was glad to see that lovely cover included on the e book edition ________________This is an historical novel set in Canada and France in the period between World War I and World War II The main characte [...]

    15. I just finished reading the historical novel Unravelled by M.K Tod It has an interesting premise summed up by its log line Two wars Two affairs One marriage The novel opens in 1935 Canadian veteran Edward Jamieson has received an invitation to go to France to commemorate the Battle of Vimy Ridge Edward has struggled to overcome what we now call PTSD and later hidden his memories of the war from his wife Ann So, he s not eager to return to the place where he survived such horror Yet, something el [...]

    17. Particularly relevant with the seemingly unending conflicts around the world, M.K Tod gracefully presents the effects of war on the soldier and the women he loves wrapped up in a story that is hard to put down, despite moments of heartbreaking pathos Focusing on the lesser described veterans of WWI, the story begins with an invitation to attend a memorial dedication in France Edward has spent the years since returning to Canada from the war working to overcome the effects of his time in battle w [...]

    19. I enjoyed reading Unravelled , and although it took me a little while to identify empathise with the main characters, I found it hard to put the book down after starting Part II.The novel takes us to Canada in the period from the end of WWI to WWII, during which a former WWI soldier and his wife see their marriage challenged by the difficult circumstances The two things I liked most about the book was 1 to discover how the Canadian had been impacted by the two world wars as a European, I did not [...]

    20. Unravelled was a fascinating novel with quite an interesting setting and perspective It touches on themes of marriage, trust, duty, sacrifice and the effects of the two world wars on families, regardless of where in the world they lived in during this time no one is spared from these events I really liked that the reader got bits of what Edward was going through with his PTSD from his experiences during World War One.The novel also gives an interesting look at the push and pull, ebb and flow of [...]

M.K Tod s haunting, beautiful novel explores the unraveling of a rock solid marriage when people and events of the past invade the present WWI veteran, Edward Jamieson is desperately in love with his wife, Ann, but is haunted by memories of the past the grim trenches that almost took his life, and a beautiful Frenchwoman, Helene, who captured his heart, but inexplicably vanished When Edward spots Helene at a WWI memorial, he is forced to question the path his life has taken, and whether or not h [...]

    22. This was an informative book, that gave an immense amount of detail about the feelings of the men fighting and the families they left behind both of the World Wars The main character was just the right age to have been a young man at the front lines in the first war, and a middle aged man of high rank doing espionage work in the second.I learned from the book, but I didn t really like it As is pretty obvious from the title, the guy and his wife both had affairs during their marriage This is not [...]

    24. I loved how Unravelled showed you both sides of the war the political, the fighting in the trenches to story we all know best , but also the human side The struggles that go on in their private lives How the war effects their relationships, but also what effect it has on their family and loved ones It was very emotional to read about the heartache those who got left behind had the endure the mothers, fathers, wives, sisters, sons, daughters To me, M.K Tod s writing is a tribute to those silent v [...]

    25. I was partway into this book when I thought the plot was really familiar, and realized that I d read the same plot in M K Tod s other book, Lies Told In Silence but told from the point of view of another main character in this book Interesting to see part of the story told from two different perspectives This book continues on from WWI to WWII and really showed the effect of war not just on soldiers but on their families too I also enjoyed the connection with Canada s espionage training centre u [...]

    26. MK Tod s book Unravelled is a perfect start to a story that ends with Lies Told In Silence Both books are centered around World War 1 There is romance, intrigue, and action from two world wars in Unraveled, told from a Canadian point of view Her follow up book was from the French point of view Unravelled starts with a trip back to France, where long ago memories and feelings are stirred up, and end with secrecy in another world war, and longing and romance I thoroughly enjoyed the book and rec [...]

    27. Although I read M K Tod s Unravelled , after I read Lies Told in Silence , I believe they can be read in any order in which you discover them They are both well written and researched novels about two beautiful love affairs which take place during WWI and WWII Both books center on a Canadian soldier who is involved in both of these wars.Since I have enjoyed these novels by M K Tod I am looking forward to her next publication Time and Regret.

    28. Och love and its ways.War time romance, adultery aftermath amidst war time struggles are woven into this story that tugs at the heart in some parts Due to their individual circumstances, you will find yourself empathizing with each of the characters.

    29. 3.5 5 I enjoyed the story and the setting This was a story that kept my interest, I just didn t feel a strong connection to the characters I did enjoy reading about both wars and how they affected this family Overall, a good read.
